What is a Sewage System?

Sewage treatment is the process of removing contaminants from wastewater, primarily from household sewage. It includes physical, chemical, and biological processes to remove these contaminants and produce environmentally safe treated wastewater (or treated effluent).

If your domestic or commercial property isn’t connected to the mains sewer, your sewage will most likely go to one of the following:

  1. A septic tank - an underground tank where the solids sink to the bottom and the liquid flows out and soaks through the ground or into a ditch

  2. A sewage treatment plant - a part-mechanical system that treats the liquid so it’s clean enough to go into a river or stream

  3. A cesspool or cesspit - a sealed tank having no outlet and used for the storage of sewage which will need to be emptied on a regular basis

  4. A pumping station - these are designed to handle raw sewage that is fed from underground gravity pipelines. Their aim is to move wastewater to higher elevations.

We would suggest not putting the following items down your system in order to prevent blockages and pump issues - paper towels, baby & make up wipes, sanitary towels, tampons, condoms, cotton buds and dental floss, to name a few.
